Paulo Teixiera da Cruz, was born in São Paulo,SP, Brazil in the 25th Day of July 1934. Got his Civil Engineering degree at Universidade Mackenzie –SP in 1957, his Master’s degree at the Massachusets Institute of Tecnology (M.I.T.) in 1960 and his Dostorate at Escola Politecnica – University of São Paulo in 1964. Did some Pos-Doctoral work in 1972 in the Imperial College of the University of London, University of California in Berkeley, and at the Rock Mechanics Laboratory University of Mexico, and in 1991 at the Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil in Lisbon, Portugal.
From 1961 to 2011 he was Professor of Escola Politécnica combining his Academic work with Consulting work in design and contruction for a large number (~50) of Earth and Rockfill Dams, mostly in Brazil. At present he is Consultant for a series of dams and diques related to the Belo Monte Project in the Amazon Area, and another series of dams and diques along the 300km canal and levees to bring water from the São Francisco River to the dry States of the North East of Brazil. During 20 years he acted as Consultant for the World Bank for 40 Earth and Rockfill dams in the State of Ceará.
He has contribute with Technical Papers and gave key-note lectures in many national and International Conferences since 1960, and actually has 3 paper on Concrete Face Rockfill dams in the 2015 Lisbon Second International DAM WORLD Conference, one for the XXX Seminário Nacional de Grandes Barragens and a key-note Lecture for the XV Pan-America Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engeneering – Buenos Aires.
Has published 2 books on Dams: 100 Barragens Brasileiras – Casos Históricos-Materiais de Construção- Projeto-1996 and Concrete Face Rockfill Dams – 2009 (with Bayardo Materón and Manoel Freitas), and 2 books related to other themes: Praias e Barcos – 2004 – related to his 70th birthday and Bela Cintra,954 – 2014 related to the 100th anniversary of his family house in São Paulo.
