Main Professional Records
Developed applied research in Geotechnics, as residual strength, slope stability and its stabilization, rainfall triggering on landslides, debris flows control, ground treatment and improvement.
Published more than 100 papers in peer review journals, symposia and congresses in Brazil and abroad, including book chapters on slope stability and natural disasters. Lecturer in several national and international conferences, delivered the 1st Juan Montero Olarte Lecture in Colombia, 2016.
At the University of São Paulo, in parallel to the professional activities, was Associate Professor, teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in Engineering Geology, Soil and Rock Mechanics, and Ground Improvement. Advised graduate students for M.Sc. and Doctor degrees, having participated in several examination panels.
After retirement from the Academy, acts as independent consultant on his expertize, participating in several Pannel of Experts in international hydropower projects, in Peru, Costa Rica, Argentina, Panamá and Brazil. Acted in more than 50 different dams, either in the design or for construction problems, and claims.
As Expert Witness acted in Arbitrations or accidents for hydroelectrical projects, dams, slopes and tunnels, as tunnel 501 of the Highway North Ring in São Paulo, Pando tunnel in Panamá.
Coordinated the design of 7 tunnels for the gas ducts for Petrobrás, in Brazil and Bolivia, and 6 tunnels for the 500km ore duct of Anglo America Brazil.
Former Vice President of the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM), from which received the title of “Fellow”. Was President of the Brazilian Committee on Rock Mechanics, and Director of the Brazilian Association of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, from which received the Terzaghi Prize and the title of Geotechnical Specialist.
Since 2012 is Chairman of the ISRM Technical Commission of Soft Rocks.
